Way before the magnificent Amazon River was mapped, the Ancient Egyptians were collecting Amazonite from their mines in the mountains of Gebel Hafafit on the Red Sea coast for use as decoration in the palaces and tombs of the Pharaohs.
Of course the Ancient Egyptians did not call it Amazonite or the scientific name, Microline Feldspar, but used the names Neshmet or Heseg for the light green gemstone which made such gorgeous jewelry, amulets, seals and inlays.
